KUCHUKUA

KUCHUKUA 👣

She ambles away from the battle, the buck's head firmly in her grip.

Kuchukua in Swahili means "take."

The attack was short and ferocious. Three wild dogs had taken down a small buck in the early evening and were in the process of sharing their kill when the hyena arrived. Sniffing the scent of opportunity to feed, the hyena reached the scene mere seconds after the kill had been made, leaving the wild dogs with little alternative but to try to defend their catch. The sniping dance continued as the hyena made various attempts to get to the kill, but the defence held tight. Moments later, a second hyena appeared, managing to split the wild dogs briefly. At that moment, while the dogs remained briefly distracted and a crescendo of shrill yaps and bites continued, the first hyena went straight in for the kill. Emerging successfully with the head of the victim firmly in its grasp, it ambled past us, and a few moments later it disappeared back into deeper bush, vanishing to leave behind the continued battle over the remains.

Welcome to Africa - the wise, the restless, the life giving.

This soulful land of dreamers gives rise to the underbelly of a beautiful, gentle beat that is only heard by those who listen for it. This photographic journey explores, profiles, and captures what I hope is the heart and soul of Africa's true wilderness kingdom. From its deep bush to its dry savannah and desert, Africa remains a place where life is represented by timeless vistas that are distilled into moments to treasure.
